One Person, Many Devices

by

Look around you and see how many devices with screens are around you. I have at least two devices – my laptop and my cellphone that’s within my purview as I am writing this. I have a separate desktop at home and another one in the office. I have at least one tablet. We have gone beyond one person, one device. We now live at a time one person, many devices. As the number of devices we use grows in number, our expectation is to be able to do continuous work from one device to another, whether at home or work or somewhere in between.

The cloud makes working on many devices no matter we are possible. As the use of cloud has grown, so has the number of apps that could help us do our work. We now call it apps. Not too long ago, we refer to it as software. However, when we say software, the image of a shiny disk comes to mind. The app, on the other hand, makes us think of apps on our phones.

First to mind when asked what ‘the cloud’ is, a majority respond it’s either an actual cloud, the sky, or something related to weather. – Citrix Cloud Survey Guide (August 2012)

Apple has iWork as their productivity suite apps that come bundled with their devices. Although not as popular as Google Business and Microsoft Office, it has its loyal following. Keynote is especially popular.

Google Business is the enterprise version of the Google Apps. It is the mail, docs, sheets, slides that anyone with a Gmail account is familiar with.

Microsoft has Office 365. It is a subscription cloud-based products that gives access to the user to a wide array of applications which include SharePoint, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and much more. Full disclosure, I have written two books – Microsoft Office 365 for Dummies and SharePoint 2016 for Dummies.

Office 365, Google Business and Apple iWork are by no means the only cloud-based apps that are available. There is now a multitude of different cloud based apps whose primary goal is to make you and I even more productive. However, for this post, I have limited it to these three since it is the most commonly used.

In this success for work series, I will be covering the different cloud-based apps by Microsoft Office 365 to boost your productivity. I will touch on the most common questions to get started with your Office 365 subscription and the different apps available.

Next week I would be discussing the many ways you can access your email with Office 365.
